Donald Chinchilla, 21, was charged with one count of deliberate and premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

The suspect appeared in court Thursday and is expected to return for his next mental competency hearing on April 27, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office.

“When an order for a hearing into the present mental competence of the defendant has been issued, all proceedings in the criminal prosecution shall be suspended until the question of present mental competence of the defendant has been determined,” reads the Penal Code.

The felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant personally inflicted great bodily injury to the victim. Additionally, the charging document alleges Chinchilla personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the crime.

Deputy District Attorney Jack Garden of the Crimes Against Peace Officers Section said on the morning of Jan. 8 Chinchilla allegedly confronted and stabbed a Sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot of a restaurant located in the 18900 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Santa Clarita.

The defendant reportedly fled the scene, the prosecutor said. Authorities were alerted about the attack and soon after apprehended Chinchilla and took him into custody.

If convicted as charged, Chinchilla faces a maximum possible sentence of 19 years to life in state prison.
