Saugus Woman, Eight Others Plead Not Guilty To Charges Related To $24 Million Billing Scam

A Saugus woman and eight others plead not guilty on Wednesday to 17 charges related to a $24 million billing scam that defrauded dozens of insurance companies throughout Southern California.

The nine suspects named are Amber Anguiano, 29, of Saugus; Melissa Navarro, 29, of Sylmar; Gloria Sandoval, 42, of Lake Balboa; Crystal Lynette Garcia, 22, of Lake Balboa; Cynthia Gomez, 31, of Sherman Oaks; Jamilett Ortega, 34, of Lake Balboa; Arnulfo Reyes III, 23, of Reseda; Francisco Javier Gomez Jr., 32, of Sherman Oaks; and Angela Rehmann, 38, of Sherman Oaks.

Officials with the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office allege that the defendants billed more than $80 million in invoices between 2007 and 2013, of which about $24 million were deemed fraudulent by investigators.

The defendants are accused of billing for Spanish translation services for patients who did not need or use interpreters and at clinics staffed by doctors who spoke Spanish, according to a news release.

All nine suspects are being charged with one felony count of conspiracy to commit a crime and insurance fraud.

Anguiano and Gomez Jr. are each being charged with four felony counts of insurance fraud.

Navarro, Sandoval, Garcia, Ortega, Gomez, Rehmann and Reyes III are each facing between two and nine counts of insurance fraud.

The time the alleged charges took place range from March 2007 to January 2013.

If convicted as charged, they face possible maximum sentences ranging from 13 to 20 years in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the California Department of Insurance.
