Cina, a Canyon Country resident, was charged last month in relation to the Oct. 6 crash that killed 37-year-old Katie Evans, a Saugus mother of six, according to officials.

During Thursday’s court appearance, officials pushed back Cina’s preliminary hearing to January 17, 2018 at the San Fernando Courthouse.

Toxicology reports indicate Cina had a blood alcohol content of .21 at the time of the crash, with the legal limit at .08.

Investigators suspect alcohol may have contributed to a fatal car crash on Golden Valley Road late Oct. 6, 2017, officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.

“There were some open containers in the primary person’s vehicle,” said Lt. Rob Hahnlein with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station shortly after the crash, confirming that they held alcoholic beverages. That driver was later identified as Cina.

“It just looks like a person traveling south on Golden Valley accidentally hit the right curb heading into traffic coming northbound, striking oncoming traffic,” Hahnlein said.

Evans, was returning home after visiting her twin daughters, who had recently been born prematurely at the UCLA Intensive Care Unit, when officials said Cina crashed into her. Evans was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Too many Santa Clarita families have been tragically impacted because of drunk driving,” shared Bob Sharits, The Way Out Recovery SCV’s program director. “Katie Evans’ death should be a wakeup call for our valley.”

The twins had been born prematurely at 25 weeks, and both had weighed only 1.5 pounds. Since their birth on August 13, Evans had been by their side at the UCLA ICU.

“Katie was at UCLA every day, holding her baby girls,” said an individual close to the Evans family.

Evans leaves behind her husband and six children: four boys, ages 12, 11, 9 and two, as well as the twin girls.

“This tragic event seems to be another case of driving under the influence that is plaguing our community in Santa Clarita,” said Steve Lindberg, a friend of the Evans family. “How many more innocent lives need to be senselessly lost before adults and teenagers in this community wake up to the fact that their actions are not only criminal, but fatal?”

The children are the ones who have lost the most, he said.

“The Evans family, like so many others before them, will now be changed forever,” said Lindberg. “These children will grow up without the nurture and tender loving care of their angel mother.”

  1. She changed her legal defense to what?

  2. Does anyone proofread news articles anymore? I guess she has a new attorney.

  3. ….SO many of these before this that should’ve been a wake-up call about drinking and driving here in SCV, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference! People just ARENT getting it…..

  4. She changed attorneys most likely.

Four years to life is what she can get if convicted of felony dui, manslaughter. The young lady who caused this horrible accident looks fairly well put together in her photo. I hope she’s got a hefty insurance policy. Who was she drinking with, and why didn’t somebody stop her from getting behind the wheel on that fateful day? BA level 2.1 is 3 Times the legal limit, right? Sheez, wasted lives. What a pity.

  5. Correction….21

  6. This is a really poorly written article.

  7. This accident could have been prevented. The tragic loss of a loving mother and wife occurred on a very dangerous roadway that transects Santa Clarita and has become a high speed shortcut between the 14 frwy and the 126/5 interchange. The City could have done a better job designing Golden Valley Road.

  8. There’s no way you can design a highway to be drunk-proof! Never mind blaming the City. Look at the person who got behind the wheel drunk and took a life!

  9. Agreed, Mama Bear. When is this ‘no mia culpa’ thing going to stop? Blame the bar, blame the roads, please! Blame the DRIVER who decided to drink, knowing full well that she would be driving her own car home afterwards.

  10. Put together? She looks like a druken whore who stole someone elses life. Karma will have to exact some extreme suffering to pay her back for this.
