UPDATE 8:45 p.m. – Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies are working with the department’s Special Enforcement Bureau and a Mental Evaluation Team to negotiate with the suspect, according to Deputy Joanna Warren.

“The threat is not there any longer, so right now it’s about communicating,” said Warren.

It is known that the suspect is a female, black 60 year old.

The initial call came from the LA County Department of Public Social Services after officials became concerned with the woman’s “bizarre and paranoid behavior,” according to Warren.

Deputies continue to evacuate residents within the senior apartment complex, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Residents will be transported on city buses to the Castaic Aquatic Center nearby where the American Red Cross will provide food, drinks and medications that the residents may need, according to officials.

UPDATE 6:15 p.m. — Castaic Road has been closed north of Lake Hughes, according to officials on scene.

UPDATE 5:20 p.m. — Special Enforcement Bureau deputies have arrived on scene and entered the building, according to KHTS reporters on scene.

UPDATE 5:00 p.m. — Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station officials have confirmed that deputies are still on scene dealing with an active situation at the Castaic Lake Senior Apartments.

“The suspect is still believed to be barricaded at this time,” Sgt. Wayne Waterman, at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station. “Deputies with the Special Enforcement Bureau and mental health teams are responding.”

Deputies on scene have requested for a beanbag gun at the font of the building where the suspect may be, according to Waterman.

ORIGINAL STORY — Deputies were conducting a “welfare check” at the senior center, located on the 31000 block of Castaic Road, when they heard shots fired.

“They heard shots fired in the building, but they are unsure if shots were fired at the deputies,” said Sgt. Waterman. “No deputies are injured and deputies did not return fire.”

As of 4:20 p.m. on Friday, law enforcement officials are not sure if the female suspect had fled the building complex, but they are treating the situation as a “barricaded suspect,” according to Waterman.

Two buildings have been evacuated and residents are being relocated to the community center within the apartment complex.
