A deputy rescued a small dog from a parked car in Canyon Country in 90 degree heat and arrested the owner on animal cruelty charges Tuesday.

The deputy spotted the dog in a white sedan in the parking lot of the Canyon Country Walmart at 26471 Carl Boyer Drive, officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said in a tweet.

The temperature outside the car was over 90 degrees, and the deputy reported the dog had been inside the car for a while.
“All windows are up, so I’m going to have to break the window,” the deputy explained in a video posted with the tweet.

Temperatures are expected to reach 95 degrees Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service, but are predicted to drop to the 70s by the end of the week.
In 2016, a California bill, called the “hot dog law” was passed, freeing residents who break car windows “in good faith” to remove an animal from a hot vehicle from criminal or civil liability.

This is a sad story with a happy ending for the dog. I hope the dog finds a new owner.
