“They have developed some leads and are following up on those leads, but we don’t have any information that we can release to the public at this time,” said Lt. Rodney Moore with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau.
Los Angeles County Fire Department officials responded to a call at Mile Marker 4.88 on Big Tujunga Canyon Rd. on the morning of Jan 5. When they arrived, fire crews found a Chevrolet car completely engulfed in flames.
Firefighters called the U.S. Forestry Service to help douse the fire due to concern that it would spread to the surrounding hillside. Once the blaze was knocked down, officials opened the trunk of the burned vehicle and found a body “burned beyond recognition,” according to officials.
Based on evidence at the scene, investigators said they believe the man was murdered. A homicide investigation was launched immediately afterward, law enforcement officials said.
It is unknown if investigators have discovered the identity of the person in the trunk, or who owned the car. Moore said he could not comment on the status of the case Tuesday afternoon, but said the case was still under active investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
