‘Faux Badge Bandit’ Apparently Died By Suicide After Goleta Bank Robbery

Law enforcement officials believe a man who killed himself after a bank robbery in Goleta Friday was likely the “faux badge bandit,” who struck nine banks throughout California over a two-month period, including one in Newhall in June.

“It’s a possibility,” said Lt. Kevin Huddle with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department. “Our criminal investigations unit is working with the FBI.”

The criminal was dubbed the faux badge bandit by the FBI because he appeared to be impersonating a law enforcement official during several of the robberies.

“He was actually brandishing what appeared to be a police badge during some of the robberies in Southern California,” FBI Spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. “We believe he was not a legitimate law enforcement officer.”

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department released the identity of 41-year-old Keith Goodwin, who took his own life several hours after the Goleta bank robbery west of Santa Barbara.

The bank robber passed the teller a note demanding cash and made threatening statements, while letting the teller see a handgun, according to Santa Barbara Sheriff’s officials.

After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the man exited the rear of the building into the parking lot.

Several hours later, law enforcement officials received a call from an employee at a business, who “reported a suspicious person had come into the business, had discarded clothing and was in the bathroom,” according to Sheriff’s officials.

Deputies found a vehicle matching the description of the bank robber’s car in a nearby parking lot.

After evacuating the building, deputies entered the bathroom where the suspect was reported. When they opened the bathroom door, they found a man with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Huddle confirmed on Tuesday the man killed himself with a handgun.

On June 15, the faux badge bandit robbed a Wells Fargo branch in Canyon Country, the fifth robbery associated with him throughout Los Angeles County.

The robber stole an undisclosed amount of money from the bank and fled down Sierra Highway.
