Sheriff’s Department personnel secured several Palmdale schools and detained one shooter after numerous 911 calls of shots fired on campus at the Palmdale high school Friday morning.

On May 11, the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station reportedly received over a hundred calls regarding a possible school shooter at Highland High School.

The campus went on lockdown, and deputies began clearing the school, searching for both the suspect, victims and what ended up being a false report of hostages in the campus library.

“As the incident unfolded at Highland High School, deputies learned that one 15-year-old male juvenile student was struck in the arm by gunfire and transported to a local hospital by an unknown individual,” said a Sheriff’s Information Bureau news release. “The juvenile is currently in stable condition.”

After conducting their initial investigation, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were informed that an off-duty LAPD officer had received a call from the the suspected gunman’s father, and that the 14-year-old suspect had said that he was heading toward a shopping center after shooting “his gun up in the air.”

“Deputies arrived at the shopping center and detained the subject for one count of attempted murder,” said the news release. “The subject’s weapon was also recovered from an open field west of the school. It was an SKS Rifle.”

An SKS rifle is a semi-automatic rifle that was made in the USSR following World War Two.

The high school was then cleared and a search warrant was given at the suspect’s residence.

“We look at this incident and the way that it rolled out, we were very fortunate that the incident wasn’t much worse than it was. It really is due to the way everybody came together and worked together, from our deputies, to our fire partners, FBI, ATF and all of the players who came together very quickly right after this occurred to put together what occurred today,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said. “When you hear the accounts, the idea we all come together, we all work together when something happens, we make it work”.

In addition to Highland High School going into lockdown, deputies responded to another school, Manzanita Elementary, located a few blocks away, after receiving multiple reports of shots being fired on that campus as well.

Deputies from multiple Los Angeles County Sheriff’s stations, officers from the California Highway Patrol, and Special Enforcement Bureau personnel simultaneously searched both locations for a possible gunman, to locate possible victims and find any evidence of the shootings.

“A short time later, deputies concluded their search of the Manzanita Elementary School campus and found no evidence of a shooting,” said the news release. “The school campus was cleared, but remained on lockdown.”

As of Monday morning, deputies have not released the name of the suspected gunman because he is a minor.
