A drunk Canyon Country man allegedly punched a deputy trying to help him Sunday morning and sobered up to felony charges of battery on a peace officer.

Deputies were trying to assist 28-year-old Erik Pigati and another man in the 20400 block of Kelsey St. at around 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning, according to Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Pigati allegedly struck the deputy in an unprovoked attack, prompting a response from additional deputies in the area.

Pigati will return to the Newhall Municipal Court Jan. 30 for a preliminary hearing. In the meantime, he faces a $50,000 bail.
