Katie Evans, 37, a mother of six children, died Friday, October 6, when she got into a fatal collision on her way back from the hospital on Golden Valley Road. She was visiting her twin girls born prematurely less than two months earlier, according to friends.

The driver who hit Evans is currently under investigation, according to Sheriff’s Department officials, who have yet to confirm the identity.

In the meantime, detectives are continuing their investigation, and the community responded with an outpouring of support for the family.

“Jacob is left to care for 6 kids by himself,” reads the YouCaring fundraiser page that has been shared more than 130,000 times, and is more than half-way to its half-million-dollar goal. “There will be many child care costs, as well as unforeseen expenses. We know many would like to help but don’t know how to, or are too far away to help in person. If you would like to donate towards childcare and other expenses, you could make Jacob’s life a little easier.”

In addition to the fundraising, community members have come up with creative and helpful ways to support Katie’s husband, Jacob, and their six children.

A laundry drive that’s picked up the tab for approximately two years’ worth of loads was started by Brendie Heter, a friend of the family.

“We wanted to do something tangible that would help practically,” Heter said. “I’ve worked with the Lost Sock Laundromat (on Lyons Avenue) for other outreach efforts, and it was a natural fit. Our hope is Jacob can spend less time doing laundry and more time helping his kids during this tragedy.”

The effort so far has raised money for about 4,000 pounds worth of laundry, or about two years’ worth. The service includes pick up, washing, folding and returning, Heter said.

Furthermore, the Facebook page is also being put together in an effort make it easier to identify what might help best, with an outpouring of support in the aftermath of the family’s tragedy.

“We’ve had so many requests through the Santa Clarita Coalition of residents and neighbors offering to help with gas cards, gift certificates, funds and more,” said Jeri Seratti-Goldman, KHTS AM-1220 co-owner and member of the coalition, “we found it easier to do a Facebook page, where we can reach out to the family, to make sure they’re not only receiving the support people are offering, but also to make sure the family doesn’t become overwhelmed while they look to rebuild from this tragedy.”

While Santa Clarita residents are seeking to support the family, detectives continue to gather information into their investigation into the crash.

“There were some open containers in the primary person’s vehicle,” said Lt. Rob Hahnlein with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, confirming that they held alcoholic beverages, in initial news reports. No DUI charges have been filed with respect to the crash.

The next step for investigators, according to Traffic Unit detectives with Santa Clarita’s Sheriff’s Station, is to obtain information from a car’s “black box,” which is similar in idea to ones used in recording flight information.

After a fatal crash like the one that killed Katie Evans, detectives can grab valuable information from a car’s black box, according to Sgt. Scott Shoemaker, who could not discuss any specifics of the case, as it was part of an ongoing, active investigation.

After detectives get a search warrant to obtain the information from a person’s vehicle following a crash, they’re able to learn how fast a car was going at the time of the crash, which way the wheels were turned, the status of whether safety equipment was used, and more, which is recorded by the aforementioned box, Shoemaker said.
