Newhall Man Arrested For Attempted Murder In Connection With February Shooting

Deputies arrested a Newhall man on suspicion of attempted murder Wednesday in connection with a shooting last month near an apartment complex.

Nestor Cruz, 20, was arrested in connection with a Feb. 20 shooting at a Newhall apartment complex. An investigation by the Santa Clarita Valley Station’s Career Offenders, Burglary, and Robbery Apprehension (COBRA) team led to the arrest. The COBRA unit focuses on gang-related and juvenile crime in the Santa Clarita Valley.

“The victim was treated for a gunshot wound,” said Lt. Ignacio Somoano, who leads the station’s detectives. “Based on the investigation conducted by COBRA detectives, Mr. Cruz was arrested for the crime.”

“Deputies responded to the 21400 block (of) Grape Lily Circle, Newhall that night in regards to a possible gunshot victim,” said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

After deputies located the man with the gunshot wound, they quickly alerted LACoFD officials and then transported him to a local hospital, according to officials.

The victim’s identity was not released by officials.

Cruz is currently being held on $2,070,000 bail. His next court appearance date was not immediately available.

  1. This is happening all too often. So much violence here now. Maybe it’s time to move out of the “safe city” of Santa Clarita.
