The man pictured, an older white male, possibly in his 60s, used a similar mode in at least three separate robberies, according to Detective Berry of the Sheriff’s Department’s Major Crimes Bureau. The suspect has not yet been given a moniker from FBI agents, officials said.

However, officials have learned that he’s done this before, identifying him as a suspect in previous Goleta and Carpinteria bank robberies, as well.

“He hit in Carpinteria, he hit in Goleta, he’s up and down the 101 corridor right now,” said Detective Berry of Major Crimes Bureau, who’s one of the investigators working on the case.

“Same thing, same note,” Berry said in response to questions about the Newhall robberies in June.

On June 12, the man pictured is seen committing the robbery of a Wells Fargo bank on the 24100 block of Lyons Avenue.

A little over two weeks later, the man, whom detectives are trying to name, walked into a Chase bank on Lyons, and committed the same crime. In the Chase case, the whole incident took any of the bank’s customers realizing what was going on, according to interviews given by patrons at the bank.

“The notes are all the same,” Berry said, describing the M.O. in both Newhall robberies. “He demands the money, says he has a gun and, generally, apologizes after he leaves.”

A customer who was in the bank during the second robbery, at the Chase on Lyons Avenue, described the experience in the video below:

The FBI’s Los Angeles Office is now using its expertise to track the M.O. and appearance of the suspect and compare it against a database, said Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the office.

FBI officials, who give monikers to assign serial robbers who often travel between local law enforcement jurisdictions to commit crimes, have yet to assign a nickname to this particular bandit, as of this morning.

Officials said more information was expected be released soon. #KHTSNews will update the story with more information as it becomes available.
