No one was killed in the shooting that followed the pursuit; however, all officer-involved Sheriff’s Department shootings are investigated by homicide detectives.

The incident started with a police pursuit that briefly passed through Santa Clarita started at Olive View Medical Center and ended in Northridge, officers said Tuesday.

Deputies from County Services Bureau responded to the Olive View Medical Center psychiatric emergency room regarding a call of a mentally ill person armed with a metal pole, according to a Nixle issued by law enforcement officials.  Upon arriving, a deputy was immediately confronted by the suspect as the deputy exited his marked black and white patrol vehicle.

As the deputy stepped back from the suspect and away from his patrol vehicle, the suspect quickly entered the still running patrol vehicle and sped away.

A vehicle pursuit ensued that traversed the north end of the San Fernando Valley.  The suspect drove westbound on Roscoe Boulevard, when he suddenly stopped just east of White Oak Avenue, accelerated backward and collided with a pursuing marked black and white patrol vehicle.  A deputy involved shooting occurred.  The suspect was able to proceed forward and turned left onto White Oak Avenue where the pursuit continued southbound from Roscoe Boulevard.

Deputies continued to pursue the suspect southbound on White Oak Avenue until the he suddenly pulled to the right and stopped on the west curb line of White Oak Avenue.  The suspect surrendered to deputies at the scene of the traffic stop and was treated for injuries sustained as a result of the deputy involved shooting.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials were contacted during the incident, because after the suspect stole the car, he drove it onto I-5 freeway and then exited at the I-5 and 14 Freeway junction, before heading south and back into the city of Los Angeles and LAPD territory.

Detectives are responding to the area of Roscoe Boulevard and White Oak Avenue in the city of Northridge, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Deputy Involved Shooting.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and there is no additional information available at this time.
