The reported shooting, which was called in just after 8:30 p.m., is believed to have taken place near a Chevron gas station on the corner of Newhall Avenue and Sierra Highway.
A deputy at the gas station scene said the incident moved on to the 14 freeway. The deputy was not identified because they were not authorized to speak about the incident.
A black Mercedes vehicle and a gray pickup truck were involved in the incident in Newhall, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Leo Bauer. They received the initial call from the California Highway Patrol.
The black Mercedes was stopped on the freeway, Bauer said, but deputies are still working to determine if the car stopped of its own volition or if it crashed. He confirmed three suspects were detained at gunpoint at that scene.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department officials did not disclose if anybody was injured in the incident. Paramedics were still staged at the freeway scene at 9 p.m. according to a Los Angeles County Fire dispatcher.
As of 9 p.m., all lanes of the southbound 14 freeway at the 5/14 split and all lanes of Sierra Highway in both directions at Newhall Avenue are shut down.
Deputies detained the single occupant of a silver pickup truck at a Walmart off of Golden Valley Road shortly after 9 p.m. But it appears the occupant of the vehicle was wrongly identified, and deputies released the person in the Walmart parking lot.
