While many were out celebrating, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies kept busy on New Year’s Eve, with more than 150 “tags,” or incident responses, a Sheriff’s Station official said Monday.

“In between 8 p.m. (Tuesday) and 4 a.m. (Wednesday) we had 157 tags, or deputy-responded  calls,” Hershey said.

The calls ranged from reports of loud music to assault cases, said Lt. Mark Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

There were two arrests for drunken driving between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to Sgt. Rich Cohen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The Sheriff’s Station’s Traffic Unit increased patrols during that time, as well, Cohen said.

There were seven reports of Santa Clarita Valley residents who were believed to be shooting weapons into the air; however, most of those calls end up being fireworks, and there were no arrests made for illegally discharging a firearm, and no weapons were seized, Hershey said.

Deputies countywide were cracking down on the “incredibly dangerous” practice of celebrating the new year by firing a weapon into the air, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

There were no major felony arrests during that period, however, there are several incidents, such as a case of a man being beaten by multiple suspects, which are still under investigation.

The majority of the calls were for alleged noise violations.

“We had something like 100 complaints of loud music,” Hershey said.

The DUI patrols were part of an extra enforcement effort by several law enforcement agencies over the holiday, and Los Angeles County-wide arrests saw a 4.6 percent increase over the same time last year, according to a Nixle report from the Sheriff’s Department.

“The 2013-14 Winter Holiday DUI Mobilization crackdown on drinking drivers has ended and resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from the sobriety checkpoints, special saturation patrols and routine patrols in Los Angeles County over the past 20 days,” the statement read.

From 12:01 a.m. Dec. 13, through midnight Jan. 1, officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 2,268 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In 2012-13, 2,168 DUI arrests occurred during the 19 day holiday campaign.
