The Sheriff’s COBRA and Crime Prevention Units went throughout the Santa Clarita Valley to see if 239 probationers lived at the address listed in their record, said Lt. Ignacio Somoano of the SCV Station.
“Some residents see people get arrested and then back in their homes a few weeks later,” said Somoano. “We want to show the community, we are following up on these probationers to ensure they are adhering with the terms set by the court.”
The operation, conducted Saturday, resulted in at least 35 locations where the probationer was not living at the address, and 30 more were not home at the time of the visit.
Sheriff’s deputies are set to notify the probation department of the dozens of people who are not at the address listed.
The probationers who have listed a false address may be subject to arrest, said Sheriff’s officials
“We conduct these operations to verify they are actually living at the house,” said Somoano. “If we were deploy the resources needed for a search, we want to make sure it is the correct address.”
Some people list a false address or the home of a family member to the probation department, added the lieutenant.
For some crimes, including driving under the influence and domestic violence, people convicted of a crime can be sentenced to probation, Sheriff’s officials said.
The conditions of probation very case by case, and can include the probationer to be subject to search at any time.
“A judge can order the surrendering of search and seizure rights,” said Somoano. “This helps law enforcement in the event we need to do a compliance check inside the home.”
Deputies, along with the probation department, also conducts compliance check operations to go inside the home and search for narcotics, weapons or any other potential violation.
“We use all of the resources possible to provide the best service to the community,” said Somoano.
