Deputy District Attorney Sharon Ransom said Laura L. Purviance pleaded no contest on June 30 to one count of first-degree murder and admitted using a handgun in case LA073342.
On Feb. 13, 2013, Purviance lured her 61-year-old mother, Caroline Purviance, into her bedroom and then shot her in the back of the head, according to evidence presented in court. The defendant then took the victim’s car and fled to Oregon where she was arrested two days later, the prosecutor said.
Caroline Purviance worked for the William S. Hart Union High School District from March 1999 to January 2004. She was hired at Valencia High School as an instructional assistant. She also worked at Saugus and Canyon high schools in the same capacity during her time with the district.
Laura Purviance attended Saugus High for a little over a year before transferring out of the district.
The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.
