“The Seasoned Bandit” bank robber, so-called for his description as white male in his 50s-60s, struck again Monday — but this time his take was denied by a brave bank employee.

The suspect, whose identity remains a mystery to FBI and law enforcement officials in several counties, tried to once again rob the Wells Fargo on Lyons Avenue in Newhall, around 4 p.m.

He entered the bank as a customer, passed a note to the teller like he has in at least nine other bank robberies stretching from Santa Clarita to Santa Barbara, but this time, the teller recognized him from media reports and refused to give him any money, according to a detective with the Major Crimes Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Detectives believe it’s not only the same serial bank robbery suspect who’s now tried a half-dozen bank robbery tries in the SCV alone, but that it’s the same suspect who robbed that very Wells Fargo location June 12.
“Same car, same guy, same hat and glasses,” said Detective Berry of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “He hit the same bank that he hit the first time,” he said, adding that it was a “pretty rare” move.
And that’s probably with good reason.
The teller, after recognizing the suspect, backed away from the counter, drawing the attention of the bank’s manager, Berry said.
The suspect became frustrated with the speed of things, telling the two employees to hurry. After realizing he wasn’t getting any money, he hurriedly left the location, fleeing south on Wiley Canyon Road, according to witness reports.
Detectives now believe he’s consistently using a champagne-colored, hard-top PT Cruiser, “with gold flakes” in the paint, which might be a custom job.
Santa Maria Police, as well as Sheriff’s Department officials, have released photos of the suspect in hopes of generating an identification from someone who knows the suspect. He has now robbed nine banks in total, including the four locations northwest of the Santa Clarita Valley. Monday’s attempted robbery was his 10th try since June.
In Santa Clarita, he’s consistently stolen from a “U-shaped” corridor around The Old Road, between Lyons Avenue and Magic Mountain Parkway, said detectives with the Major Crimes Unit.
Also troubling investigators, there’s about 20 banks and credit unions along this Santa Clarita route alone, in addition to the stretch of road between Santa Clarita and Santa Barbara. Detectives suspect the man lives somewhere in between — he’s also robbed banks in Carpinteria, Goleta and Montecito — and are hoping someone who knows the man or recognizes his car will phone in a tip.
As in several of the other recent bank robberies, no one was hurt in the incident, and based on preliminary information.
“The notes are all the same,” said Berry, describing the M.O. in both Newhall robberies, in a previous interview. “He demands the money, says he has a gun and, generally, apologizes after he leaves.”

Did the brave bank employee keep his/her job? I used to work at a Wells Fargo, and I was assured during training that I’d get fired if I did anything “brave” during a robbery.
