James Allen Hayes, 55, pleaded not guilty Monday, according to Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Hayes, also known as “James Curtis Hayes,” aka “James Killen” and aka “Ceaser Killen,” reportedly won what was, at the time, one of Ventura County’s biggest lottery jackpots in 1998. And after winning an $18 million lottery jackpot, his life became a cautionary tale, according to law enforcement officials, which ended up in an 11-count indictment for robbing 10 banks.

At one of the banks, his second attempt at robbing the Wells Fargo on Lyons Avenue in Newhall, a teller told him “no” and he left with nothing but his note.

Hayes, a former security guard, reportedly went into banks and handed the tellers a note saying he had a gun, and demanding the money from their cash drawer.

The thefts started in April 27, when the former Dial security guard, stole $3,300 from a Montecito credit union, according to a federal complaint, and ended September 26, when he stole $3,700 from a U.S. Bank branch in Palos Verdes.

An anonymous tip from someone who spotted his plates is what led to his arrest, according to detectives.

“We didn’t believe (it) at first either,” said one official who is familiar with the investigation. “(Hayes) blew through all the money and then resorted robbing banks to pay his bills.”

From Hayes’ 1998 lottery win, his ex-wife received half of the money and he ultimately ended up with a $6 million lump sum, officials said.

With his winnings, he purchased an apartment building — which burnt down after he sold it — and a Ferrari that he wrecked.

Officials also confirmed that he is broke and has a $1,000-a-week heroin addiction.

When law enforcement officials caught him this week, he was squatting at a place in Ventura.

Hayes’ trial is expected to start December 17, according to Mrozek.
