Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department North Patrol Division Chief Jacques “Anthony” LaBerge was driving on the southbound SR-14 freeway Tuesday morning when he heard a crime broadcast regarding a robbery that had just occurred, said Shirley Miller, public information officer for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. LaBerge, a 30-year veteran of the Sheriff’s department, is a former Captain of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Dispatchers stated that a woman had just been robbed of her purse on the 19300 block of Golden Valley Road in Canyon Country,” Miller said.

The victim, a 23-year-old Hispanic female, was sitting in her unlocked car in a parking lot waiting to meet carpool partner, Miller said. The male suspect, 20-year-old Aaron Nunez, of Sylmar, approached her from behind, opened the unlocked driver’s side door and demanded the purse.

At first, the victim refused but then Nunez simulated that he had a handgun in his pocket and  she handed over her purse, Miller said. The victim was unharmed.

Nunez was seen leaving the scene in grey BMW and heading towards the 14 freeway, Miller said. LaBerge spotted Nunez’ vehicle on the 14 freeway near the Newhall Avenue exit.

LaBerge coordinated with other units and was able to stop Nunez at the Polk Street off ramp on the 210 freeway in Sylmar.

Nunez was arrested on suspicion of felony robbery and transported to the SCV Sheriff’s Station, Miller said.

“The success in apprehending the robbery suspect was made possible by the multiple units that responded in addition to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies, a K-9 unit and a County Services Bureau Unit that responded,” LaBerge said.
