Sheriff’s Department Melts 3,500 Guns At 25th Annual Gun Destruction Event

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department melted more than 3,500 guns recovered from around the county Thursday as part of a program running for a quarter-century aimed at removing guns from the streets of cities such as Santa Clarita.

LASD Chief Eric Parra presided over the destruction at Gerdau Steel Mill in Rancho Cucamonga Thursday morning.

Since the 2017 gun destruction, 3,566 weapons were confiscated by the LASD and other law enforcement agencies throughout the county. The weapons include handguns, rifles and automatic weapons collected in criminal investigations, probation seizures and guns turned in by citizens at collection events.

In Santa Clarita, guns can be turned in at any time, said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“It’s an ongoing part of the services we offer,” she said, “if people need to surrender their firearms for whatever reason.”

The guns are moved from the Santa Clarita station to a central facility, where they await destruction at the next gun melting event.

“The firearms that are surrendered at our station, they are taken to the central evidence and disposal unit,” Miller said.

The Gerdau Steel Mill will convert these weapons into steel rebar for use in highways and bridges throughout the county. With this year’s gun melt, Gerdau Steel Mill will have destroyed approximately 170,000 firearms over the past 25 years in partnership with the LASD.

“The weapons to be destroyed will never be used again to commit a crime, or to threaten, intimidate or harm an innocent victim,” Sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

  1. So guns are the problem again? Once again a stationary object caused the problem! You guys need to pull your head out!
As for me I’ll keep my guns!!!

    • You can keep your guns. The ones the police confiscated were used in crimes, and destroying them is part of the legal process. Citizens turn in guns for reasons that make sense to them. For example, if a close friend or relative dies from an accidental gun discharge, a lot of people will reasonably want to destroy the gun.

  2. 3,500 Thank yous.

  3. Yep , but the Sheriffs statment was not complete
He forget to mention that the guns he destroyed will never be able to Legally save a life or defend one’s family ever again. Or be used in any recreational sports or competition as well.
But it makes him feel better and gets his name printed in the paper , good job, maybe he should concentrate on putting the bad guys in jail instead of running a steel mill,

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Yep, I know it’s tough for the lefties to understand our Constitution but it’s written in plain english , please read it sometime.

    .

  4. So how many of the sheriffs deputies & contractors pocketed some of these guns.
