BREAKING: Santa Clarita Valley deputies are searching for a person with a weapon near La Mesa junior high school on May Way in Canyon Country. UPDATE: The "soft lockdown" has been lifted.

Posted by KHTS Radio on Friday, August 31, 2018

Around 11 a.m. Friday, deputies responded to the 26000 block of May Way, in Canyon Country where a man with a firearm was seen across the street, said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“We received secondhand info that a student saw a male with a gun in the neighborhood, not on campus. For safety, the school was put on precautionary soft lockdown while deputies do protective sweep of areas,” according to a tweet by SCV Sheriff.

During a soft lockdown, campus security locks the gates and students are generally not allowed to leave and the school continues to function as usual.

At 11:30 a.m. the soft lockdown has been lifted, however deputies are still conducting a search for the male suspect, according to Dave Caldwell, spokesperson for the William S. Hart School District
