Corey Keiffer, 31, barricaded himself in the backyard of a home in the 19600 block of Babington Street on Wednesday and was found deceased at 2:30 a.m. Thursday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Lt. David Smith with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Where Keiffer resides is unknown, Smith said.
Special Enforcement Bureau officials found the suspect deceased after deputies made entry into the shed when there was no communication with the suspect for a long period of time, according to a news release.
Keiffer previously stated he was armed, said Shirley Miller, public information officer with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, adding that he was uncooperative.
Surrounding homes in the area were evacuated for the safety of the residents, according to a news release issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect stated he was suicidal to deputies who made contact with him in the shed, Miller said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Crisis Negotiations Team made numerous attempts to bring about a peaceful resolution.
Keiffer was initially spotted near the intersection of Langside Avenue and Soledad Canyon Road, adjacent from a liquor store, earlier Wednesday afternoon, said Sgt. Brian Allen with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The suspect then ran through the Santa Clara wash, away from deputies.
Shortly after, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station then received multiple reports from residents claiming they saw an individual matching the Kieffer’s description run through their yard in the Canyon Country area, Allen said.
Kieffer was considered a parole at large and had a warrant out for his arrest, said Allen.
