Placerita Junior High in Newhall recently experienced an after-hours, on-campus burglary in the school cafeteria that left some supplies missing and property damaged. The junior high’s lunchroom was the latest victim, which resulted in nearly $1,500 worth of damage for the William S. Hart Union High School District, which oversees the SCV’s public junior highs and high schools.
Sheriff’s Department officials said the Newhall junior high was one of several snack bars that have been vandalized in recent weeks, since schools have come back into session.
Between the hours of 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, the thieves pried open and damaged the roll-up door and stole three cases of Izzie drinks, five cases of Snapple juices and a case of ice cream. Two cash registers were also left pried open and damaged at the scene, but no money was stolen.
The burglary was reported to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station by a Placerita Junior High staff member the day after the break-in, when it was reported this was the second cafeteria burglary to happen within two days. The total value of stolen goods and property damage amounts to about $1,481.18.
The staff member reported that there are video cameras on campus, and deputies are investigating the footage. Deputies also reported there were fingerprints left on the metal roll-up door, and that a print deputy was requested to report to the scene.
“If anyone has information on these thefts,” said Lt. Brenda Cambra of the SCV Sheriff’s Station, “we’re asking them to come forward.”
