New information regarding Tuesday’s incident, where deputies detained at least four people at gunpoint near Jakes Way, has been released. Sheriff’s officials said two of the people detained were later arrested on suspicion of multiple crimes.
“Deputies were patrolling in that area, when they saw some items strewn out in a garage,” said Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “They found several individual hanging out around a garage, and they recognized some of the individuals as suspected gang members.”
One of these individuals took off running when they saw that law enforcement officials were in the area, arousing further suspicion from deputies on scene. Deputies detained the remaining individuals in order to remain proactive in their efforts to protect residents, Miller said.
“Deputies thought there was possibly a robbery in progress,” Miller said. “They later found out that the individual who owned the garage was fine with them being there, and released the suspects.”
But while the suspects were being detained, deputies discovered one of them was in possession of a counterfeit social security card and meth, prompting them to arrest the man, according to Miller.
Law enforcement officials also arrested a female juvenile in connection with a separate assault case filed a week prior, Miller said.
KHTS Radio originally reported deputies detained the suspects at gunpoint in connection with a report of an assault with a deadly weapon near Sandy Drive in Canyon Country.
Officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were not able to provide any additional information at the time, as units were still investigating.
