Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a report of an assault and a rescue call shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday, said Lt. Rob Hahnlein of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
A father and son were reportedly arguing while on the freeway near Castaic. The son was driving, and in response to the argument, allegedly jerked the steering wheel and drove the car off an embankment, according to the preliminary information obtained by Sheriff’s Department officials.
The report indicated the vehicle might have traveled as far 600 feet, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department official who was not authorized to speak on the record.
Fire Department officials were on scene by 1:09 p.m., near where the car plunged over the side, by the CHP Inspection Station in Castaic.
The son separated from the vehicle shortly after the crash, and deputies searched the surrounding area.
While deputies and Fire Department personnel on scene treated another first-responder for heat stroke, the son surrendered himself to deputies and was then transported for medical treatment.
The incident is still being investigated by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies, and the names of those involved were not released. No arrests had been made as of 4 p.m., according to Sheriff’s Station officials.
