The vandalism, which school officials told KHTS they believe was a tasteless senior prank, was committed by four individuals caught on security footage.

“They called it a senior prank, but my seniors definitely don’t want that to be part of their legacy,” said Janet Feeder, an environmental science teacher supervising the effort to replace the trees.

Though the effort was originally led by graduating seniors, students of all grades have joined in to help, she said.

The group planted roughly 45 seeds of four different species.

“Our goal is to replace the three trees with many more trees,” said Feeder.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detectives are working with the school to review surveillance footage of the incident, Hart District spokesman Dave Caldwell said.

No arrests have been made, said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. But the culprits face felony vandalism charges.

“Trees take a long time to grow. They don’t grow overnight,” Valencia High School Principal John Costanzo said. “The kids are upset and disappointed.”

School officials are asking anybody with information about the “violent act to our campus” to come forward and email VHStip@hartdistrict.org.

The memorial tree was originally planted by the Valencia High’s graduating class of 1999 as a gift to the school.

A plaque nearby dedicated the tree to “Fallen Vikings Past, Present, and Future.”
