Travis Marton, 23, of Valencia, was believed to have been killed on a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach on New Year’s Eve sometime before 2:56 a.m., according to Sgt. Rachel Johnson.

“A passerby motorist said he thought that there was a dead person in the roadway,” she said.

Officials received a report shortly before 3 a.m. of a man reportedly lying in the road in a southbound lane.

The collision reportedly took place on a stretch of PCH known as East Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive, Johnson said.

When NBPD officers responded, they found Marton, who was declared dead at the scene.

Marton was found near the intersection, and officers believe he was trying to cross the road when he was struck and killed.

Officers immediately put out an alert to surrounding law enforcement agencies looking for a vehicle that might have sustained collision damage.

Laguna Beach Police Department officers found Ronald Aviles, 56, of San Clemente, a short time later driving a white minivan that appeared to have been in a collision, Johnson said.

Aviles was questioned and then arrested for a felony hit and run, Johnson said, noting additional charges might be added later because the investigation was only 12 hours old and ongoing.

Officers suspect he “left the scene of an accident causing great bodily injury or death,” she said.

Drugs and alcohol are not expected to be factors in the crash at this time.

Aviles is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He’s expected to be arraigned in an Orange County courthouse within the next few days.

    • I am Travis Marton’s Aunt Tanya, I just text him wishing him a very Happy New Year. Little did I know that our last text message would end at 7:48 pm New Year’s Eve. At least he told me he loved me and would be safe and staying with friends. I was able to tell him I loved him as well. He was a wonder Nephew, I will always be thankful for our last few minuets. Travis I will always be thinking and praying for you. Love Aunt Tanya. xoxox
