This morning at 7:30am, a crossing guard was hit by a car as he stepped out to stop traffic at the intersection of Vista Delgado Drive and Decoro. He was taken to Henry Mayo Hospital, and received treatment for minor injuries.
George Hammer, a retiree, works as a crossing guard for Santa Clarita Elementary School.
The driver of the car that struck him said that the sunlight glaring through his dirty windshield obstructed his view.
The Sheriff’s Department issued a statement detailing the incident, and asked that motorists be more careful around schools. They mentioned that if the crossing guard had not been there, a child would have likely been the one to have been hit.
Cases like this do underscore the dangers of something as simple as not keeping a clean windshield. The sunlight is enough to battle at certain parts of the day, and if you couple that with smudges and film on a windshield, visibility can be cut down to zero.
There are many great local Santa Clarita carwashes that can reduce the dangers of lack of visability, including The Valencia Auto Spa which is open seven days a week. If you have a car that is dangerously dirty, a good car wash can fix that.
