David Ewart Returns Home!

David Ewart is home!

Here’s the latest update on the Ewart Family. In the early morning on Tuesday, December 20th, fire destroyed their Valencia home. Six family members were in the house at the time, three were seriously injured and sent to the Grossman Burn Center.  Since the fire, our Valley has jumped in to assist.  This is the latest update courtesy of neighbors, Josy and Steve Block.

This has been a most extraordinary day…for a most extraordinary man.  DAVID is happily back home with his loving & caring family…they are preparing to have dinner with all the family together!  This afternoon, I loaded up my car with the remaining items we collected for David’s homecoming, and drove them over to the house.  I asked Duncan, "so…what time is David expected to come home?" and he said, "He’s home now & he’d love to see you!"  Can you imagine my glee?!?!  We had a wonderful visit – I met his niece, Emily and we chatted for a nice, long time.  David, aka "The Chatterbox", was in such good spirits and was talking (loud whispering) up a storm.  His haircut looked great!  His face is getting a little hairy & he is craving a shave.  The best thing of all was his smile!  He has a lot on his mind, and was concerned about his tortoise, which is currently in the care of a neighbor.  We will of course look into it & report back to him.  He is just learning about the damage to his house, and it is quite a "reality check" for him.  When I arrived, he was looking at some of the newspaper articles for the first time.  He is just beginning to realize the magnitude of the fire and is getting a glimpse of what the community has been doing.  Little steps.  He is SO looking forward to going to Church on Sunday – there’ll be no stopping him!  I’m not sure if he would admit it if he was tired, because he is just enjoying life so much.  Oh, and he did mention that the folks who visited him at the hospital did so much to lift his spirits!  He wanted to make sure you all know how much it meant to him!  Please remember that they are requesting no visitors this weekend, so David can get settled in to his new surroundings, and all visits next week (and going forward) should be scheduled through Mary Berg (661) 259-2877 or email her at mndberg@aol.com

MICHAEL has started working on some homework assignments.  He’s looking forward to tonight’s family reunion.  He is planning on going back to school, part-time (just 2 classes) on Monday!!!  WOW!  He is very eager to get back to school, see his friends and get back into a "routine".

BENEFIT CONCERT - Imaginary Winds will present a concert at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in North Hollywood on Friday, January 27, 2006 at 8:00pm.  Proceeds from the sale of tickets will aid the Hearts of Music Fund in its support of the Ewart Family.  The concert will consist of music written for wind ensembles of various sizes by W.A. Mozart, whose 250th birthday will be celebrated that day.  Imaginary Winds is an ensemble consisting of Los Angeles’ finest studio & symphonic woodwind, brass, and percussion artists which was founded in 2004 by its music director, Brad Warnaar.  It is the only ensemble of its kind in Southern California, and indeed, one of the very few professional wind ensembles in the entire country. The church is located at: 6020 Radford Avenue, North Hollywood, CA 91606, and is on the northeast corner of Oxnard Ave. and Radford Street, one block east of the 170 Freeway in North Hollywood,  Free parking is plentiful.  Tickets will be available at the door & admission will be $20.00 with youth and senior discounts available.  Kids under 8 or over 80 will be admitted for free.

*  Thanks to Kathy Wilson and the students in Michael’s Journalism class.  They took up a collection and then used the money to purchase gift certificates at some really "hip" stores for  Michael & his brother & sister to use.  Very, very sweet!!  The family will be so appreciative of this kind & special gift.

*  We want to thank Temple Beth Ami in Newhall, for their efforts in raising money for the Ewarts.  Karen Blum mentioned how David has touched their congregation and how he was a coach to many of their children.  She spoke of a party in the summer where David ran home from the party to get his violin to entertain everyone at a backyard concert.  They are looking forward to offering their services to help with the recovery & rebuilding of their lives.

*  We think we have a venue for the Spring/Summer Boutique.  Does anyone have experience with running a boutique that would like to co-chair this event?  Please let us know as our chairperson could use a hand in making this event a success.
