Dedication Ceremony At West Creek Is A Musical Experience

khts_schools_chalkboardOn a Tuesday morning filled with lilting music and kind words, a boisterous crowd gathered for the West Creek Academy Dedication Ceremony at the school campus.

With each of the school’s students and staff members seated outside in front of the campus stage, various government officials including Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich gave glowing remarks of not only West Creek Academy, but of the partnerships between parents, children and school administrators to deliver some of the finest education in California.

Speaking to the students, Antonovich said, “You’re being given the opportunity to have a quality education in a quality school.”

Various school officials also spoke of the school’s genesis while facing a tight budget. The Saugus Union School District is currently the lowest-funded district in the Santa Clarita Valley, and in the lower bracket for the state.

“We need to go to Sacramento and say ‘Look how much we do with so little,’” said Judy Umeck, a member on the district’s Board of Trustees.

With a current enrollment of 614 students, West Creek Academy is the newest addition to the Saugus Union School District. Built by Valencia developer Newhall Land and Farming, it has a goal of becoming a premier music academy, with each of its students learning to play an instrument and read music beginning in kindergarten.

That focus was evident throughout the event, as students and school staff sang and played songs dedicated to both their country and school.

A quartet of cellos and violins, which even featured District Superintendent Dr. Judy Fish, performed the chamber ensemble “Minuet in G” by Bach.

Later in the ceremony, the entire student body sang the “West Creek Academy Song,” written by staff members Rob Ayers and Cynthia Kirk. Cory Pak, the school’s principal, accompanied them on guitar.

“Today we are taking out first step toward bringing our dream to our students,” said Pak. “We are also dedicating our dream, our passion, of leading our students to the pathway of the arts, and the gateway to the world.”
