Deputies Ask For Public’s Help In Spotting Counterfieter

counterfieterPalmdale Sheriff’s Station Detectives are seeking the public’s help in identifying an individual passing counterfeit one hundred dollar bills at local retail establishments.

The suspect is described as 20 to 30 year old Black male, approximately 5’07” to 5’10” and weighs between 150 to 175 lbs. (see photo)

In all of the instances the suspect enters the retail establishment and selects small dollar items for purchase. He then engages the clerk in conversation while handing them a one hundred dollar bill to pay for the items. Distracting the clerk with conversation, prevents the attendants from examining the bills, which if done would reveal that they have been washed and reprinted as one hundred dollar bills.

This technique in which counterfeiters take genuine five dollar bills and wash them to reprint them as one hundred dollar bills, is commonly done because of its ability to pass widely used counterfeit pen detection techniques. By using a genuine five dollar bill to reprint on, the counterfeit will not be detected by pen devices because of their ability to detect counterfeit paper only.

Detectives with the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, are asking anyone who thinks they may recognize the suspect in the surveillance images to please contact Detective Hutchinson at 661-272-2456. You can also provide information anonymously through “Crime Stoppers” by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.

Businesses should be on the lookout for such counterfeit bills by combining ultraviolet detection techniques with training and education for their employees. Through the City of Palmdale’s Business Watch Program, business owners can receive free training for them and their employees on how to detect and what to do when faced with counterfeit currency. Information on this free training can be obtained through the city’s Public Safety Office at 661-267- 5541.
