A Castaic resident suspicious of a car driving around without its headlights early Wednesday morning called the sheriff and now, two burglars driving a stolen car with a back seat full of evidence are guests of the county.
Enrique Cortez, 32, and his little brother Reinaldo Cortez, 26, are both in jail on suspicion of felony auto theft, residential and vehicular burglary.
According to Lt. Mark Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station, the pair were reportedly driving in the area of Cambridge Avenue and Hasley Canyon Road about 3:15 a.m. with their headlights off. Deputies stopped the car and discovered one of the back windows was shattered.
Further investigation revealed that the car had been stolen from a residential garage and the vehicle contained items stolen in two other vehicle burglaries.
Hershey said that Enrique Cortez is on parole for prior burglary charges and Reinaldo is on probation for prior theft charges. They are being held at the Santa Clarita Valley station in lieu of $50,000 bail and are due to appear in court on Friday.
