Deputies Release Weekly Santa Clarita Valley Crime Reports 6/24 to 6/30

The Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station and California Highway Patrol in Newhall stepped up their enforcement during this long holiday weekend.

July 3-7 is a maximum enforcement period for the CHP and they are conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday night at an undisclosed location in the unincorporated area of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Several individual charged with crimes in the Santa Clarita Valley appeared in court this week.

Celia Gallardo of North Hills was sentenced to 60 months on Monday for defrauding investors in the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and Antelope Valleys through her companies Gold Feather Realty and Gold Credit Investments.

On Tuesday and Friday, witness testimonies were heard in the case of Cesar Navarro, a 21-year-old man charged with murder in a gang-related stabbing of Franco Olea on December 1, 2012.

In addition, Nicolas M. Hernandez, 65, of Porterville, was booked Saturday at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on a murder charge in the death of Reyna Palacios, 44, of Pomona.

Palacios was killed while she tending to her 1999 Honda, which was disabled on the right shoulder of the northbound SR-14, when Hernandez allegedly struck her with a 2012 Freightliner big rig, north of Agua Dulce Canyon Road. Hernandez did not remain at the scene.

Below are reports from the different Sheriff zone’s throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station divides its coverage into five zones for the Nixle reports. They are listed below alphabetical order.

Here’s a summary of incidents that took place in the last week in Santa Clarita (If your zone isn’t listed, keep checking back for updates):

Canyon Country east

This week in Canyon Country-East we had 8 Part-1 crimes. Of those reported crimes, there were 2 assaults, 1 burglary and 5 larcenies.

An assault occurred from the 18000 block of Sundowner Way on June 26 at 12:50 p.m. Deputies responded code 3 to an assault with a deadly weapon call. Once the deputies arrived there was a large crowd. While the deputies were attempting to detain the suspect, he became uncooperative and was pepper sprayed. The suspect’s sister was arrested for forcibly trying to intervene and stop the arrest of her brother. The suspect and his father were arrested for threatening the victim with a knife and kicking his front door in.

An assault occurred from the 15400 block of Nasturtium Drive on June 29 at 4:00 p.m. Deputies responded code 3 to a family disturbance. The call stated the suspect was under the influence of drugs and was trying to hit his wife and daughter. The call was then updated that the suspect had a knife. When deputies responded they asked the suspect to place his hands behind his back but he did not comply. When deputies grabbed the suspects arm, he pulled away his arm from the deputy’s grip. The suspect was pepper sprayed and taken to the ground. After a brief struggle the suspect was handcuffed.

A garage burglary occurred from the 18000 block of Danielson Drive between June 28, 6:00 p.m. – June 29, 6:00 a.m. The garage door was pried open from the bottom corner. Suspect(s) entered the garage and stole electronics from the unlocked vehicle.

A grand theft occurred from the 16000 block of Placerita Canyon Road on June 28 between 12:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Two rear seats were stolen from an unlocked vehicle. A petty theft occurred from the 15000 block of Daffodil Avenue on June 19 between 1:00 a.m. – 3:00 a.m. A tool bag and miscellaneous paperwork was stolen from an unlocked vehicle. A shoplifting occurred from Vons. The suspect attempted to push a cart full of groceries out of the store. When he was confronted by an employee, the suspect left the cart and ran out of view. Two shopliftings occurred at Target. The suspect was seen on surveillance selecting electronics, placing them in a shopping cart and walking out of the store without paying for the items. On a different day, a suspect was seen on surveillance walking out of the store without paying for an item.

Continue to lock your windows, garage doors and make sure to also lock your vehicles.

Make sure to always park in well-lit areas and be cognizant of your surroundings. If you see any suspicious activity either close to your home or while you are out shopping, call the Sheriff’s station at 661-255-1121 or 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Canyon Country west

This past week in Zone 7, the following Part-1 Crimes occurred:

(1) Residential Burglary, (2) Vehicle Burglaries, (2) Shoplift, (2) Grand Theft, (2) Petty Thefts and (1) GTA.

A vehicle burglary occurred near the 19100 block of Soledad Canyon Road. An unknown suspect entered the victim’s vehicle and took approximately 350 pairs of sunglasses from the back seat. There were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle.

A second vehicle burglary occurred near the intersection of Rainbow Glen Road and Green Jay Place. An unknown suspect gained entry to the victim’s vehicle by tampering with the driver’s side door lock and took a speaker box. Also taken during the burglary was the hood of the vehicle.

A petty theft/shoplift occurred near the 19300 block of Soledad Canyon Road. A male suspect replaced his old shoes with new shoes and walked out of the location, leaving his old shoes in the new box. The incident is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station Detectives.

A female suspect was arrested for petty theft/shoplifting near the 26400 block of Carl Boyer Drive when she attempted to walk out of the location after failing to pay for items she concealed in her purse. The suspect was detained by loss prevention personnel and subsequently arrested by responding deputies.

A vehicle was taken near the 27200 block of Marchland Avenue. A 2012 Mercedes E350 was taken from the driveway of the location.

Along with petty theft, deputies working in the Canyon Country West area made several arrests, including charges for burglary and narcotics.

Newhall

This week Newhall (Zone 6) saw four part one crimes. Of those crimes, Newhall had one grand theft auto, one residential burglary, one vehicle burglary, and one rape reported.

Although a rape was reported this week, it was alleged to have occurred back in January of the year 2000. LASD Special Victims Bureau is investigating the incident (ref -08722).

A 1999 Toyota Camry was reported stolen from the area of 5th Street and Race Street in Newhall (ref -08553).

A residential burglary was reported from the 24800 block of Parchman Drive in Newhall. An unknown suspect(s) entered the victim’s attached garage and stole a bicycle. Entry and exit was made via the unlocked side garage door (ref – 08594).

A vehicle burglary was reported from the 23600 block of Meadowridge Drive in Newhall. Stereo equipment, a laptop computer, and sunglasses were among the items stolen from inside the vehicle (ref -08848).

Saugus

This week in Saugus we had four reported Part-1 crimes. There was an attempt grand theft in the 27700 block of Borage Court on Friday, 06/28/13, at approximately 2:00 a.m. The victim awoke to a noise along the side of his residence. When he went outside he discovered two males attempting to steal the air conditioning unit. The suspects fled the location.

There was a vehicle burglary at the Metrolink Station located at 22122 Soledad Canyon Road on Wednesday, 06/26/13. Upon arriving back at her vehicle, the victim discovered her passenger window was smashed and miscellaneous items were taken.

There was a petty theft which occurred sometime within the past month in the 22100 block of Pamplico Drive. The victim stated that his roommate stole personal items from his residence before moving out. Detectives are following up on this incident.

There was an assault/domestic violence in the 22500 block of Fenwall Drive on Monday, 06/24/13. Deputies responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call. Deputies learned that a female attempted to stab a male during an argument. Deputies later arrested a female for assault with a deadly weapon and a male for domestic violence. The investigation is ongoing and being handled by detectives.

There were multiple arrests over the past week in Saugus. The one which stands out occurred early Thursday morning, 06/27/13, in the 21100 block of Altena Drive. CPU Deputies conducting a 24-hour operation located a known probationer, Lisa Lepore, who was standing outside her residence near the open doorway. Deputies contacted Lepore and, during a probation search of the immediate area, located methamphetamine. Lepore was subsequently arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
