Deputies Respond To Friday Night Fight At Hyatt

By Leon Worden / SCVNews.com

A mixed martial arts event billed as “SCV Fight Night” got out of hand Friday when an unscheduled fight broke out at the Hyatt Regency Valencia hotel.

SCV Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Hershey said an off-duty Los Angeles Police officer who attended the event called the sheriffs when members of the crowd got unruly.

Initially reported as 150 people involved in a fight and all of them intoxicated, Hershey said that wasn’t the case.

The were just two instigators and the fight was over by the time deputies arrived at 10:45 p.m.

“Security probably squelched it,” Hershey said.

SCV Fight Night was an event of the California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization. A full-contact sport commonly known as ultimate fighting, it involves two contestants who are shut in a cage and use a combination of punching, kicking, wrestling, karate and other methods to knock each other out.

Friday’s event started at 7 p.m. and nine matches were scheduled. The 18 contestants ranged in age from 18 to 34, most in their 20s.

Hershey said deputies helped empty out the Hyatt ballroom at the request of fight organizers. They wanted it clear so a losing fighter in a cage could receive medical attention. The fighter was transported by ambulance to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. His condition was not known but he was conscious, Hershey said.

Deputies were armed with tasers as a precaution but they were not used, Hershey said. No arrests were made.
