Sheriff’s officials, working with several other public
service agencies, conducted a graffiti-gang eradication sweep Wednesday that
started in the early hours of dawn and ended up mid-morning with nearly four
dozen criminals behind bars.

Deputy Deborah Tweedy, who works out of the Crescenta
Valley station, coordinated the
sweep for the Community Oriented Police division of the Sheriff’s Department.

Tweedy said that 165 locations were visited during the
operation that stretched from Lancaster
to Temple City and included the
communities of Palmdale, Santa Clarita, Lost Hills, Altadena,
Pasadena, Burbank
and Glendale.

The operation involved more than 300 law enforcement
officers, including personnel from Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
California Highway Patrol, State Parole and other related agencies.

Because of the scope of the operation, statistics for each
station were not broken out, however, Sgt. Dean Currie of the Santa Clarita
station told KHTS that there were three teams of deputies working the SCV area
and that they were responsible for checking 15 locations. He said that he was
aware of one arrest made by his team, but was not sure of statistics for the
other two local teams.

Tweedy said that the sweep was the first one of its size in
Region 1, one of three areas served by the Sheriff’s Department. The operation,
which she said was very successful, yielded 34 felony and 12 misdemeanor
arrests, resulted in the detention of one juvenile and the issuing of four
citations.

She said that 11 firearms were seized and five other weapons
were taken from suspects.

Immigration officials arrested five people for immigration violations;
all are subject to deportation. Parole and probation officers were busy during
the raid, arresting one individual for a parole violation and 23 for violations
of probation.

Tweedy said that there are also 30 pending violations, which
may or may not result in an arrest depending on information gathered during
follow-up investigations.

In addition, three Section 8 cases were initiated and four
minors were removed from different locations.

She added that planning the operation took nearly a month
and a half. The COPS team tries to conduct similar operations at least four
times a year.

Additional information was obtained and provided by the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, in whose district the raids were conducted.
