Derailment Site To Be Back To Normal Tonight

SpecOpsHazMatTF1Several families were temporarily displaced, but there were no injuries in a Wednesday afternoon derailment of 21 train cars in Littlerock.

The cause of the derailment is still being determined, but Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt said that the last few cars should be righted and the tracks repaired by 8 p.m. tonight.

“We worked through the night to remove the derailed cars and expect everything to be up and running tonight,” he said. “We are very fortunate that there were no injuries and no substantial damage to the community.”

The derailment happened at 1:30 Wednesday, near the intersection of 92nd Street East and East Avenue T, where deputies set up a command post. Residents from 87th Street East to 106th Street East between Avenue S and Avenue T were evacuated for the investigation and cleanup efforts. About 250 homes were affected by the evacuation.

“It’s good that we took the precaution,” Hunt continued. “Six of those tank cars usually carry hazardous materials and, even though they were not full, it’s always good to be careful.”

Hunt said that L.A. County Fire HazMat teams confirmed that there were no leaks or spills.

Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley station went up to the derailment site to help Palmdale station with evacuations and crowd control; eight deputies went from evening shift and five from early morning shift.
