DISARM Program Takes Guns, Drugs Off Streets

County program supports cooperative effort by law enforcement and auxiliary services.

During the month of December, 100 weapons were confiscated, including 50 handguns and 20 rifles/shotguns, along with $245,000 in illegal drugs and 132 probationers were arrested during sweeps conducted by the officers in L.A. County’s Developing Increased Safety through Arms Reduction Management (DISARM) program.

The officers conducted 2,046 unannounced searches of residences, persons, vehicles, and businesses, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. The DISARM program blends the resources of the Probation and Sheriff’s Departments to perform unannounced searches of probationers and their homes, as a condition of probation, and targets the confiscation of guns, drugs, and other contraband.

Since its implementation in February of 2000, the DISARM program is responsible for the seizure of 4,856 weapons and more than $306 million in illegal drugs and drug money, and resulted in 10,446 arrests.  Ten percent of probationers in this program have been out of compliance with their terms of probation.
