Discovering Careers Offer Youth The Opportunity To Test-Drive Occupations

COClogoAsk a kid what he wants to be when he grows up and you’re bound to get a variety of answers. Some are obvious. (Every little girl has gone through the ballerina stage, and most little boys wanted to be a sports star at some point.) Others are more inventive.

What will help these kids make that crucial decision when they get older? How can they decide if their dream job is what they actually want to do with their lives?

To help students decide, College of the Canyons is hosting its fifth annual Discovering Careers Expo this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local residents are invited to come to the COC cafeteria and parking lot 3 to participate in a variety of interactive presentations and demonstrations by local industry professionals. Hands-on activities in past years have included building Lincoln log houses from blueprints, looking at pond water under a microscope provided by the Castaic Lake Water Agency and programming robots. This gives students the opportunity to explore different careers while interacting with experienced men and women.

The event is designed primarily for middle school students but is open to parents and children of all ages.

COC Director of Career Services Anthony Michaelides, said that the event was originally designed to be “one big career day for all the high schools… the idea was to really help the businesses out, help the high schools out, to pull it all together into one big central event.”

Over the years it became increasingly focused on younger students, because “middle school is… where they really start to explore careers and… decide what they want to do,” Michaelides said.

He and early collaborator Ron Rudzinski, now principal at Golden Oak Adult School, hoped the the expo would become and Epcot-style event, all about learning and exploring.

Included among the list of scheduled presenters at this year’s Discovering Careers Expo are representatives from the following industries and career sectors:

  • Arts, Media and Entertainment
  • Building and Construction
  • Education, Child Development and Family Services
  • Engineering and Design
  • Fashion
  • Interior Design
  • Business and Finance
  • Health Sciences
  • Medicine
  • Information Technology
  • Manufacturing and Product Development
  • Marketing and Sales
  • Public Services
  • Transportation

“This event will provide students with a priceless opportunity to begin exploring, at a young age, what people really do after they’re finished with school,” said Adriana Estrada, COC Summer Institute coordinator. “All the tools and info they need to begin thinking about a future career will be provided, you just have to get here.”
