Dodger Day Draws Thousands

Santa Clarita in the spotlight at Dodger Stadium.

Pilar Penaranda sings the national anthem

While the Dodgers often promote “Think Blue,” it was hard to avoid thinking "Santa Clarita" Sunday afternoon, as our town’s residents made their presence known.

Children and adults from local elementary schools, baseball/softball organizations and businesses held their banners high as they marched in a mini-parade on the field warning track, following a local youth “homerun derby” in center field.

And Harry Welch, the head coach of Canyon High’s State Champion football team, switched sports for a few moments to throw out the first pitch.

To cap off the pre-game activities, 15 year old Pilar Penaranda sang stirring renditions of “God Bless America” and the National Anthem. When she finished, the crowd gave her a thunderous applause, and the game began.

While the game didn’t exactly turn out the way dodger fans would have hoped (the Dodgers lost), the spirit at the park appeared to remain high.
