[view:node_ad=5]Last night, all five City Councilmembers unanimously selected Duane Harte to serve as the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commissioner, at the August 28th meeting.

Commission member Duane Harte was nominated to serve on the Commission by Councilmember Tim Ben Boydston, replacing previous Parks Commissioner Karin Nelson, who resigned in June 8, 2007.

“As a resident of the Santa Clarita Valley for more than 30 years, I am very familiar with every part of the City as it continues to grow and I want to make sure that the amenities grow with it. I look forward to being a viable part of the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission,” commented Commissioner Duane Harte.

Harte has been a resident of the Santa Clarita Valley since 1974 and was appointed to the Parks Commission by former Mayor and City Councilmember JoAnne Darcy, from 1999-2002.

Additionally, he served as the chair of the Parks Commission from 2001-2002. Harte is also a member of the Downtown Newhall Redevelopment Committee, president of the Senior Center Charitable Foundation, treasurer and board member of the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, and past chair of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Harte will be sworn into office at the September 6th Commission meeting at 6:00 p.m. and will serve as a City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commissioner until his term expires on July 31, 2008.

The five member Parks Commission advises the City Council in matters pertaining to parks and public recreation; and to cooperate with other governmental agencies and civic groups in the advancement of sound park and recreation planning and programming; and have and exercise all of the powers, duties, rights, privileges and authorities of a City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission, as provided for by the State of California.

The five-member Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission meets on the first Thursday of the month, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on the first floor of City Hall, located 23920 Valencia Boulevard. Members of the public wishing to address the Commission may attend any meeting and submit a speaking request form.
