Ducks Quack Their Way To Health Care For All

duckybillA little rubber duck could put you and a special someone on a seven-day cruise – and more importantly, help provide health care to your neighbors.

On Saturday, October 16, thousands of the little quackers will be turned loose in Paradise Cove at Castaic Lake, destined to be the first in the funnel.

In fact, some might even be wearing their shades in anticipation of that trip on the ship, donated by Princess Cruises.

The 8th Annual Rubber Ducky Regatta is a fundraiser for the Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, Inc. and ducks are available for adoption now.

Individual ducks are only $5 each, but everybody knows that no duck swims alone. A Quack Family of six ducks (5 ducks, plus a freebie) is $25; a Quacker’s Dozen (12 regulars plus two extras) is $50 and an entire Duck Flock of 24 ducks (pay for 20, get 4 free) are only $100. Last year’s Rubber Ducky Regatta raised more than $60,000 that went directly toward patient care at the non-profit organization’s three health centers.

duckpile “This event allows everyone in the community to come out and support a truly needed cause: health care for all,” said Cheryl Laymon, executive director of SDFHC.

Gates open for the event at 10 a.m.; Paradise Cove is in Castaic’s lower lake section. Along with the duck drop, the day will include food booths, family-centered activities, games and vendors. Admission is free; parking for the first 500 cars will be $5. The duck drop will take place at approximately 1 p.m.

All proceeds from the event will go toward patient care at SDFHC, which offers affordable, quality primary health care for residents of the Santa Clarita Valley. SDFHC makes a special effort to serve the uninsured and underinsured.

CBS/KCAL news anchor Sandra Mitchell will give a celebrity touch to hosting duties and will share the dais with Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who is the honorary chair of the event, and Santa Clarita Councilman Bob Kellar who will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Rubber Ducky Regatta sponsors to date include Super Duck Sponsor Providence Holy Cross, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, Andel Engineering, Santa Clarita Rotary and Princess Cruises Community Foundation.

Media partners for this year’s event include: KHTS AM1220, The Signal and Santa Clarita Valley Business Journal; The Magazine of Santa Clarita and elite Magazine; Los Angeles Daily News; Santa Clarita Living Magazine and Canyon Country Magazine; SCVTV; Smart Shopper; Inside SCV Magazine and At Home magazine.

SDFHC operates three health centers in the Santa Clarita Valley—Canyon Country Health Center, Val Verde Health Center and Newhall Health Center—as well as outreach sites at College of the Canyons and California Institute of the Arts. SDFHC offers a full range of health care services—physicals, immunizations and vaccines, screenings and diagnostic tests, well baby care, and family planning—to those who may not seek health care elsewhere. Patients pay based on their income. This past year, SDFHC provided service for 10,000 patient visits.

The Center was established in 1980 and named for long-time Val Verde resident and minister, the late Reverend Samuel Dixon. A not-for-profit community health center, SDFHC serves the greater Santa Clarita Valley and is governed by a board of directors, all of whom are Santa Clarita residents. The mission of SDFHC is to enhance wellness by providing quality primary health care services and health education to unserved and underserved residents, with a special emphasis on serving the uninsured. Easily accessible services are available for the entire family in both English and Spanish. Medi-Cal, Blue Cross and Healthy Families are all accepted, and a sliding fee scale is offered, keeping health care affordable for all. Services are available at the Val Verde Health Center (661-257-4008), the Canyon Country Health Center (661-424-1220) and the Newhall Health Center (661-291-1777).

SDFHC receives United Way funding and is supported by countless individuals as well as corporate sponsors who help make affordable health care possible. Tax-deductible contributions are welcome. For more information, call (661) 257-2339, ext. 302 or visit
