DUI Checkpoint Nets Arrests, But…

When I called the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department to check the status of Friday’s DUI Checkpoint, my first question to Deputy Arnold was: “Was it successful?”
“No…we had to make arrests,” He Said. “Um, ok.”

If you’re as confused as I was, don’t worry, he explained further. He said that the actual goal of the checkpoints is to let everyone know that they’re proactively hunting for drunk drivers. Therefore, a successful checkpoint would yield no arrests because no one would drink and drive.

But alas, some people just don’t get it. 2 arrests were made as a result of the operation, with one coming as a driver under the influence attempted to evade the checkpoint once inside the cones.

“Ideally, we’d like there to be no drunk drivers on the streets in the first place, but being able to catch a two of them is an added bonus of the program,” Deputy Arnold said.

The checkpoint was on Valencia Blvd, starting at Creekside and running north for about 400 feet.

The checkpoints occur every month, and are actually paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
Three additional citations were made on the night, two for driving with no license, and one for a suspended license. All three cars were impounded.

So if the goal is to eradicate drunk driving, and you catch people doing just that, I guess it can’t be successful. But sometimes, making a good sized dent in the problem is as close as you can get, and that makes it worth doing.
