DUI Checkpoint Nets One Locally, Nearly 600 Countywide

drivesoberA sheriff’s deputy sustained a minor injury at a Friday night DUI checkpoint in Valencia that saw one person arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Countywide, law enforcement officials arrested 598 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The winter holiday Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in more DUI arrests than in the same period last year. In 2010, 510 people were arrested on the weekend before Christmas.

The local deputy was injured when patrol cars snagged a rope he was holding, bringing him to the ground, said Sgt. Richard Cohen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Barbara Mutaw, traffic secretary at the SCV Station, said 1,045 vehicles went through the checkpoint, which ran from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Newhall Ranch Road and Grandview Drive. Deputies administered field sobriety tests to 10 individuals and arrested one.

Another driver had his car impounded and received a citation for driving without a license. Seven other drivers were cited for miscellaneous traffic infractions, Mutaw said.

All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers from the sheriff, California Highway Patrol and local municipalities will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts. Multiple/DUI Driver’s License Checkpoints, Multi Agency DUI Task Force operations and local Roving DUI patrols are set region-wide to continue through the holiday season.
