Eagle Scout Helps Haiti Walk A Little Easier

By Erik Wilson

Last Saturday Andrew Aubrey sat upon a mountain of shoes, 4,359 pairs to be exact. But why and how and did Andrew accumulate such a collection? What did he plan to do with this absurd amount of footwear?

The idea stemmed from Aubrey wanting to become an Eagle Scout. The final step of which is to complete a project that demonstrates leadership and helps an institution other than the Boy Scouts of America.

Aubrey decided he wanted to collect 2,000 pairs of shoes from the community and donate them to Haitian people in need. He was unaware of the response he would get and overshot his goal by more than double.

“I have gained a new sense of the true giving spirit from everyone’s giving of their time,” said Andrew.

Teaming up with the “Soles4Souls Foundation” and other volunteers from Sport Chalet, Sunshine Daycare, Albertsons, Rio Norte Junior High School, Plum Canyon Elementary School, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which he is a member; Aubrey set up collection boxes and posted flyers to inform the city about his project.

The project came to an end last Saturday when Aubrey and all those who aided his effort met at the Saugus 1st Ward on Bouquet Canyon Road to gather all the shoes that had been donated. After tallying all 4,359 pairs of shoes, they were transported to Sport Chalet in Stevenson Ranch to be shipped to Haiti.

“I know it is only a small start, but I hope it brings them some type of hope,” Andrew explained after his project was complete.
