Attention Book Worms!

You may have been anticipating having to wait until July 1 to get your new City of Santa Clarita library card, but you’re in luck.

The city has scheduled three locations in June where you can get your card early:

• The City’s Main Street Construction office at 24406 Main Street (enter parking lot from Railroad Ave. or Main Street), June 13-25-Monday through Friday, 2 to 6 p.m.
• City Hall, 23920 Valencia Boulevard #120, June 13-24-Monday through Friday, 2-6 p.m.
• Santa Clarita Sports Complex, Aquatics Center, 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway, June 13-25 Monday through Saturday from 1-7 p.m.

To receive your new library card, you will need to show an identification and proof of address.

You may also pre-register for a library card online. On the website you will be asked to accept the terms and conditions, select a home library, and then fill out a registration form, including a password.

Upon successful completion of the online form you will be given your temporary online user ID.

After July 1, you may bring your temporary online user ID number and the password you set up online to your Santa Clarita Library in Canyon County, Newhall or Valencia to confirm your registration.

You will need to show either a valid California DriverLicense or a valid California Identification Card with a current address, or two forms of identification, one showing who you are and the other indicating your current mailing address in California.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to complete the registration process.

Upon receiving your new Santa Clarita Public Library card, you will have the ability to place up to 50 holds for materials. Non-residents of California can obtain a library card for a $10 annual fee.

As you may already know, effective July 1, 2011, the City of Santa Clarita will own and operate the three local libraries. The local libraries will continue to be public and will be free and open to everyone.

The city says library patrons and online library users will enjoy an increase in books and media, along with more days and hours and familiar faces at the three branches as many current library employees choose to remain here in Santa Clarita. For property owners in the City, the new library system will also include a reduction in your annual property tax bill.

In anticipation of opening day July 1, the City invested $900,000 for new materials for the libraries, including books, magazines, DVDs, CDs and other items.

Remember, your old Los Angeles County libary cards will not be valid at Santa Clarita libraries.
