A 4.4 Earthquake awoke many Santa Clarita residents at 4:04am, Tuesday morning. According to Cal Tech, the event occurred 3-miles south, southwest of the Whittier Recreation Center, between Whittier and Rosemead, California. It’s hypocentral depth is 11 miles.
The location is in the same area that hit Whittier on October 1,1987 with a 5.9 quake that caused considerable damage. Three people died as a direct result of that earthquake.
The quake was strong enough to be felt in Santa Clarita, shaking buildings and awakening residents. CHP informs us that the earlier reports of damage on Interstate 5 near Los Angeles was not accurate. As of now, there are no confirmed reports of any significant damage.
No known damage is being reported in Santa Clarita.
