EDITORIAL: Democrats Lie About Corporate PAC Money

Democratic congressional candidate Katie Hill has lamented the role of special interests in American elections and repeatedly pledged to refuse corporate PAC money. What she has not acknowledged, however, is her complicity in the very behavior she condemns. Not only has Hill taken money from pro-abortion special interests; she has also accepted corporate PAC money laundered through committees run by Democrats like Nancy Pelosi.

In addition to the 4.8 million Hill accepted from the PAC created by former New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg and the additional $4 million – $5 million she’s received from Democratic Party PAC’s, Federal Election Commission filings show that Hill has taken at least $50,000 from PACs funded by corporate interests. These include (but are not limited to) Nancy Pelosi’s PAC to the Futureand House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer’s Ameripac, both of which take their money from conglomerates like AT&T and Boeing.

What this amounts to is a sleight-of-hand, one which allows Democrats to simultaneously moralize about special interests andline their own pockets. Pelosi and Hoyer are a boon for candidates like Hill, who express no qualms about corporate money so long as there’s a middle man. In October, the Voice of OCreported that Democratic congressional candidates in Orange County have also received money by this tactic. Voters deserve to know just how hollow these candidate’s claims are.

On her campaign website, Hill writes, “From day one, I said I wouldn’t take corporate money.” A more accurate statement, perhaps, might read:From day one, I said I wouldn’t take corporate money unless it’s sent to Nancy Pelosi first. Hill has taken millions more than her opponent during this campaign, in no small part thanks to this corporate money and money from special interests like NARAL and Planned Parenthood.

Hill has deceived the voters whose votes she is courting. It is not necessarily unethical to take money from corporations, but it is unethical to take a position and make a pledge—to oppose special interests and refuse corporate PAC money—while breaking that pledge and contradicting that position. We cannot endorse this hypocrisy by electing Katie Hill, and that is why we must reject her shallow claims on Tuesday.

EDITORIAL: Democrats Lie About Corporate PAC Money

  1. Carl, you may have a scoop here when you site anyone as being “Pro-Abortion”.Nobody is Pro-Abortion.
A woman’s right to make decisions about her own body is more in line with reality.
You apparently favor Steve Knight, a Trump shill that voted for tax breaks for the uber-wealthy and wants to take away our Social Security and medical care to pay for them. Those may be your values but they are not mine nor those of anyone I know.

    • Last year Planned Parenthood admitted to selling fetal body parts for profit. They most certainly are “pro-abortion.” And a “woman’s right to choose what to do with her body” does not extend to requiring others to pay for it.
Perhaps it’s because you live in a liberal echo chamber that you don’t know any of the the tens of thousands of people who elected Steve Knight the last time, and will elect him again tomorrow. We know full well that he’s fighting hard to preserve both Medicare and Social Security. It’s the Democrats who are using “Medicare for all” to achieve their real goal of “Medicare for none.”

      • Planned parenthood has never admitted to selling body parts. You’re referring to a debunked video put out by the religious right. If uou’re going tonpretend to be a journalistic enterprise..check your facts. And oh yeah, stop running ads above your bogus “editorial “!

  2. First, let me say that I am a registered Democrat. The editorial was clearly pointing out the deception perpetrated by this candidate by declaring that she does not take money from corporations. It is a fascinating feat to tear up, with her two hands, ‘corporate checks’ on her television commercial with both hands simultaneously behind her back taking the same. Quite the magician is she. As far as the pro-abortion, special interest groups are concerned, there are as many as 200 corporations that support Planned Parenthood, but this is not a pro or anti-abortion editorial. This is also not an editorial that mentions Steve Knight, although you took the opportunity to spew forth the slanderous rhetoric (repeating sound bites) coming from his opponent’s negative ads. This was an editorial exposing lies, nothing more, nothing less. I have known Carl Goldman for years and you got one thing right in your reply. You don’t hold the same morals and values as Carl. Good news is that you still have time to work on that.

    • Diane, My objection was in his terminology; using the incendiary term, ‘pro abortion’.
As far as Steve Knight, he is the other, although unmentioned, candidate in this contest.
And thank you for your concern about my values.
Here are a few more of them-
      I support firearms regulation.
      I support Social Security.
I support affordable health care for all.
I resist the hateful rhetoric of Donald Trump.
I resist the fascist Neo-Nazis running lose.
I do not accept being lied to.
I believe the NRA is anti-life and a threat to our safety.
None of the above values are shared by Steve Knight.
And please note, Diane, these ‘slanderous’ claims are from his voting record which I looked up weeks ago; did you?

      • I support firearms regulation; legal ctizens should have them, criminals should not.
I support SS. I don’t support the increasing of categories of people that can claim and have not contributed.
I support affordable heath care. I do not support FREE heathcare. Nothing is free.
I don’t particulary care for some of DT rehtoric, but he is getting some things done that have needed to get done.
I hate the facist Neo-nazis. And also Antifa.
You do accept being lied to. You lie to yourself.
I believe that Planned Parenthood is anti life. You can call it pro- choice. But really it is either life or death isn’t it.

      • A few things to address to replies that have been published, even though the election is behind us. I believe in and support the Constitution, the First Amendment and all the others as well and I agree with Dave H, even though the editorial was not about morals and values. Media outlets have been publishing editorials with respect to elections and candidates for over a century starting with The New York Times (in 1860) when they supported ‘Old Abe’. As far as the timing of the editorial is concerned, what could have been Dianne Feinstein’s motive, withholding the Ford letter for 3 months? To sabotage an individual? Again, the editorial was merely exposing a misleading statement made by the newly elected congresswoman. I am still fascinated by those focused on what isn’t in the editorial, what is implied in the editorial, rather than what actually is IN the editorial. Not a personal attack on an individual citizen, but a revelation of truth that public figures are subject to. As far as any candidates voting record, that’s only the beginning of the fact finding process. I am familiar, very familiar with Steve Knight’s voting record and I voted for him yesterday. Maybe we can come together on one particular issue and that is the pervasive hatred and divisiveness the country is experiencing. It reminds me of a point in time when many good and decent people’s lives were irretrievably destroyed or turned upside down by nothing more than accusations or guilt by association. Fear and hatred swept the country. That time was McCarthyism. My grandmother was on a list. Many of my mother’s close friends were blacklisted including Ring Lardner Jr, all the members of the Weavers. Now, good and decent people that are exercising their right to support the candidate of their choice, are being vilified and are categorized as deplorable, basement dwellers, xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, racists, an enemy of democracy or just plain ignorant. Vote party, not candidate. Vote party, not issue. It’s a malignant energy that I will never, ever be a part of. Today, the voters have spoken. It is a time to respect the process and support the newly elected congresswoman.

  3. What a fantastic time to post this “front page” editorial. Not really showing your bias much, are you, KHTS? I’ve enjoyed having the news delivered to me, but prefer to see it done fairly. I am NOT a registered Republican, nor a registered Democrat. My issue is with the very obvious timing of this piece. Is this really the moment you discovered this “news?”

  4. Come on Carl – you know full well that PACs are independent entities and that, by law, candidates cannot coordinate with or control them. They are going to run ads and send mail on their own. That fact should have been noted in your piece. Of course they jumped into this race on both sides. This was really a misleading editorial. You’re better than this. Perhaps you’ll join the effort to pass the 23rd amendment to correct the Citizens United decision and get this kind of money out of politics.

  5. Come On Carl. You know full well that candidates cannot, by law, coordinate with, or control, PACs. PACs are going to pour money into both sides in crucial races by sending mail and running ads on their own. Your piece, to be accurate, should have included that important fact. Instead this is pretty deceptive.. You’re better than this. I hope you’ll join the nationwide effort to pass the 23rd amendment to the Constitution to turn over Citizens United to get PAC money out of politics.

  6. Correction to my comment – it would be the 28th amendment.

  7. Show me actual proof of what you wrote, Carl Goldman. I don’t accept anything from the Right/Republicans as truth without proof!

About abortion rights: I am Not pro or against abortion. A woman should be able to choose for herself, what she feels she needs to do, without the government (the men) getting in her way, either way. Repealing Roe v Wade will not stop abortions, it will just cause women to revert to dangerous back alley procedures. Any judgement about having had an abortion is only between the woman and her God.

  8. As the dust clears and we resume our daily lives, I’d like to express my sincere thanks
to you, Carl, for this forum in which we were allowed to express our thoughts.
