Maggie Ford, the CEO of Albert Einstein Academy (AEA), sent a letter to parents Wednesday announcing the closure of the AEA Agua Dulce Partnership Academy for students from kindergarten to 6th grade.

“As you know, given our declining enrollment and financial constraints, this has proven to be a difficult school year for everyone,” said Ford. “While I continued to be hopeful that a financial partner could be established and a plan could be developed to sustain operations next year it became clear last week that this would be an insurmountable feat.”

The Albert Einstein board voted last Thursday to surrender all charters to the Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District effective June 30, 2018.

AEA and the Acton-Agua Dulce District will continue to work together to allow the students to complete the year at the current school campuses and then transition to their new school in the coming year, according to school officials.

Larry King, superintendent for AAUD, says the district is preparing for the influx of students from Albert Einstein, but wants to continue offering options to families.

“It’s unfortunate that the governing body for the three charters found it necessary to stop operations,” said King. “We feel the school has offered choices and a unique opportunity for families in our community.”

The Acton-Agua Dulce District is hosting two informational events for families in the community affected by the closure on April 30, according to district officials.

“Our school district is trying to assist the transition back into home schools,” said King. “We are hosting the event to answer any questions families might have.”

The first session is scheduled for 4 p.m. for Einstein STEAM Academy students at the AEA charter in Valencia, and the second starts at 8 p.m. at Agua Dulce Elementry School.

The Hart District, which previously approved a charter for Einstein Academy’s high school more than four years ago, denied the renewal of the charter in 2016.

The district denied the charter for failing to serve a “balanced” population or keep adequate financial records, according to a Hart District report.

The Einstein Steam Academy petition to recharter their high school, submitted to the William S. Hart district last month, has been withdrawn, said Ford.

Representatives from the surrounding districts and charter schools will be on campuses later this month to ensure a smooth transition for all students, with more information forthcoming, said school officials.

The letter also announced the ending of AEA’s intentions to open a STEAM Academy for students in grades seven to 12 in place of the defunct Albert Einstein Academy of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

“I cannot promise you that there will be no further challenges this year, there will be,” said Ford. “I can promise you that your children will continue to be at the center of everything that we do.”
