The competition, which takes place before the week before football season kicks off, challenges each of the six teams — each of the comprehensive public high schools in the Hart district choose five lineman from their team, who are traditionally the among the largest players — to eat a 4-foot-long Sharky’s burrito.

Canyon High wolfed down their small-person sized Mexican entree in less than 2 minutes, (1:55), which edged West Ranch (2:54) by nearly a minute, as well as third place Valencia High (3:09).

“It’s a fun and exciting competition that makes the schools money,” said Adriana Dotta, a Saugus High cheerleader. “I get to see all my friends from other school stuff their faces with burritos. It’s hilarious.”

The event started nearly a decade ago while Gene Bleecker’s son, Brad, was playing football, which made his parents aware of the fundraising challenges facing all programs. Gene started the SCV Concierge as a way to promote local business, and The Advisory Group, an SCV realtor company, also joined in support.

Westfield Valencia Town Center hosted the event and sponsored the main raffle prize, and other community residents and businesses also pitched in to help.

This year, the sales of raffle tickets for a $1,500 gift card from Westfield helped raise $38,000 for the Hart district programs.

The winning school, Canyon High, received $2,000 for its football and cheer programs, and the other schools received $500 for each program just for participating.

All of the ticket sales go toward Hart district programs, Bleecker said.

  1. While I understand this event has benefitted the football teams and cheer squads for the last seven years, it seems a celebration of excess. Why not donate this food to people who are really hungry, such as the Senior Center or Food Bank?
